Objective

Provide students with the opportunity to obtain in-depth knowledge of medical problems related to nephrology using the format of e-lectures and practical seminars. More complicated differential diagnostic tasks as well as analysis of more rare diseases in combination of other medical disciplines.

Prerequisites

Successfully completed A level course in nephrology.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

The student will acquire knowledge of existing special and latest diagnostic and treatment methods in nephrology, will know the most advantageous ways of examination in different clinical situations. The student will get an idea of renal replacement therapy methods –haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, will know the principles of patient therapy, while preparing a patient for renal replacement therapy; will be able to evaluate their benefits and potential risks. The student will know the main methods to ensure chronic haemodialysis –peculiarities of the use of arteriovenous fistula and prosthesis, the use of a central venous catheter; will know the principles of patient observation, complications and possibilities for their prevention.

Skills

When using examination data, will be able to formulate indications, evaluate contraindications and limitations in diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases, and use standard techniques to select the most effective diagnostic and therapeutic route with maximum economic benefit in a given clinical situation.

Competence

Independently plans the learning process to balance the existing knowledge obtained in the compulsory course with the new material related to standard situations in nephrology; has a grasp of the benefit / risk assessment, working alone or in a group of two to three students; able to use literature, e-environment, peer and teacher knowledge, accurately formulating the question; takes responsibility for presenting the work of the student group.
