Objective

At the end of the course the student will have integrated knowledge of oral and maxillofacial surgery from previous study years, adding oncostomatology, orthognathic surgery, as well as will be able to perform small surgical operations and manipulations in dentistry, and will be able to continue postgraduate training in oral and maxillofacial surgery or a related specialty.

Prerequisites

To start study course (or semester) all previous assessments according to Study plan (D1) should be successfully passed.
Topographic anatomy and operative surgery in the oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral surgery, pathophysiology in general and special pathology, general surgery, diagnostic radiology, internal medicine with propaedeutics, pharmacology, emergency care.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

On successful completion of the study course, basic knowledge will be acquired and the student will be able to explain etiopathogenesis, clinical manifestation, diagnosis, principles and methods of treatment of oral and maxillofacial pathology, including pain control, emergency care, oral surgery, inflammatory diseases and injuries, tumours and orthognatic surgery, ethical and administrative principles, peculiarities of communication in the practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Skills

As a result of the study programme acquisition, students will be able to identify pathology in the oral and maxillofacial region, if necessary, perform independent treatment or refer the patient to another specialist for appropriate procedures (pain and fear control, emergency care, extraction, intraoral incision, biopsy, minor dentoalveolar surgery), to communicate skillfully with the patient, his family members, as well as with other medical specialists.

Competence

To be competent in the diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial diseases and injuries and the choice of treatment methods in ethical practice, subject to the relevant rules and restrictions, when prescribing treatment to a patient or referring to a specialist. The students will recognize the necessity for lifelong learning.
