Paediatric Emergencies – Advanced Course (PEK_048)
About Study Course
Objective
Learn the structured assessment of vital functions and prevention of their disorders in critically ill children by simulating clinical situations close to real situations.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of emergency situations, intensive care and paediatrics relevant to 6th year of study at the Faculty of Medicine. It is desirable to take the course “Emergencies in Paediatrics” first. It is required to read the course material before the course.
Learning outcomes
The students will learn extended differential diagnosis of life-threatening conditions, their specific nature and compensatory mechanisms in the child’s body, and critical interventions to prevent them. In addition, the understanding of the use of a structured approach and the principles of crisis resource management will be gradually and purposefully developed.
Structured assessment of a critically ill child;
Airway management: plan A, B and C;
Positive pressure ventilation with mechanical devices;
Provision of inotropic support;
Blood gas interpretation;
Leadership/ Teamwork/ Communication in crisis.
The medical students will be able to do both: take leadership by using theory and management principles and be part of a productive team by using practical skills and effective communication. The competence acquired will be universally applicable, far beyond the simulated situations during the course.
