Objective

1. Encourage acquisition of knowledge and formation of awareness about perspective dosage forms' specific nature and meaning.
2. Encourage acquisition of knowledge about role of polymers in activity extension of active substances.
3. Encourage understanding about theoretical basis of substances activity prolongation and practical meaning in preparation of dosage forms with continuous activity.
4. Encourage understanding about features of medicinal products for paediatric use and veterinary dosage forms.

Prerequisites

Inorganic, Organic, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Quantitative Analysis, Plant and Animal Biology, Mathematics, Informatics, Physics, Physical Pharmacy, Medical Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacognosy, Pharmacology. Desirable knowledge of Human Anatomy, Normal Physiology.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Understand the basic principles about formulation and development of dosage forms with continuous activity.
2. Characterise the polymers used in the preparation of dosage forms with continuous activity.
3. Characterise the quality of prolonged-release dosage forms corresponding to the Standard documents.
4. Understand a special approach in development of medicinal products for paediatric use.
5. Characterise the specifics of the veterinary medicinal product – dosage forms.

Skills

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Apply knowledge about chemical-physical features, functionality-related characteristics of excipients-polymers in the development of prolonged-release dosage forms and of dosage forms for paediatric use.
2. Evaluate the technological methods for manufacturing the dosage forms for paediatric use.
3. Evaluate the quality of dosage forms corresponding to the European Pharmakopoeia.
4. Present results of their practical work correctly.

Competence

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to understand the role of polymers and latest developments in technology in the development and manufacturing of prolonged-release dosage forms and dosage forms for paediatric use.
