Objective

To provide knowledge about evidence-based theories, materials and methods in etiology, prevention and early treatment of dental caries; to apply theoretical knowledge in the diagnosis of caries and carious lesions; develop skills to critically appraise scientific literature about new methods and techniques of prevention and early treatment of dental caries.

Prerequisites

Biology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, histology, embryology, dental anatomy.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Will explain the diet, biofilm and salivary role in aetiology of oral diseases.
Will name and explain toothbrushing techniques with toothbrush and dental floss.
Will classify toothpastes by their composition and indications.
Will describe the active ingredients of toothpastes, their mechanism of action, their effect and possible side effects.
Will name dental care products.
Will describe the use of different dental care products.
Will explain the indication and the use of professional and home-use fluoride products.
Will explain the indications of dental sealants.
Will classify and describe the methods for detecting carious lesions.
Will describe the methods of recording the severity and activity of carious lesions.
Will define the terms - prevention, primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, non-invasive and minimally invasive caries treatment, caries prevalence, severity and incidence.

Skills

Will show the patients toothbrushing and flossing techniques.
Will assure individual recommendations for his/her patients to prevent and treat oral diseases.
Will choose and apply the most appropriate diet correction for each patient.
Will analyse the quality of saliva / salivary secretion for the patient and the risk of oral diseases.
Will recommend the appropriate toothpaste for each patient.
Will recommend oral care products appropriate to every patient's needs.
Will apply the caries detection and assessment systems.
Will develop prevention and treatment plans for every patient based on their risk group.

Competence

Will be able to independently assess the need for different caries diagnostic, detection, prevention and treatment methods, taking into consideration the needs of every patient; will be able to follow the scientific literature about new diagnostic and treatment tools and rational use of existing methods.
