Objective

Learn the basics of sociology of law, legal methodology and cognition of the application of law.

Prerequisites

Legal Theory, Philosophy of Law, History of Latvian Law.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

The student will tell about and explain the essential elements of sociology of law; will know the functions, methods and forms. The student will know general views and reflections of sociology of law, and will be able to refer to competent sources. The student will know the place and role of sociology of law among other legal sciences.

Skills

As a result of successful completion of the study course, the student will be able to manage and engage in social dialogue, apply and use the acquired knowledge professionally. Will be able to identify the main types of interaction between the individual and the society, describe their rationality and peculiarities of conditionality. Will be able to apply the conclusions used in the study course to the practical work of a lawyer, based on the teaching of sociology of law. Will be able to deal with legal issues independently, using of sources of sociology of law and knowledge of their application. Will prepare and express the necessary application of sociology of law in professional work.

Competence

The student will be able to carry out independent research, correctly describing it on the basis of the acquired knowledge. Will define the areas of law, in which sociology of law is to be applied. Will clarify situations in a professional way and create elements of solution in integration of the society. Will be able to formulate social institutes, to separate them from philosophy and mass culture. Together with the relevant knowledge professionals, will develop the traditions of law and their practical application in a single perspective of sociology of law.
