Objective

1. To improve knowledge of students in practical stylistics of Latvian, in particular – the publicistic style (media language).
2. To improve practical language (written and oral) usage skills, to select means of expression corresponding to the style, content and purpose of work and accurate words in terms of content (terms, foreign words, general use vocabulary), to promote practical language usage skills, to enrich language understanding and to develop the sense of language against limited categories of vocabulary (loanwords, professionalisms, slang, in individual cases – euphemisms, neologisms, the so-called fashion words, precedent texts, etc.).
3. To know how to use, evaluate and analyse emotionally expressive vocabulary and figurative means of expression (epithets, metaphors, etc.).
4. To know how to avoid verbosity, unclarity and inaccuracy of style, to exercise to formulate own thought clearly, directly, unambiguously (morphostylistics), using vocabulary of appropriate style (lexicostylistics), logical arrangement of expressions, structure of sentences (syntax stylistics).
5. To polish practical language usage skills, editing the text and means of linguistic expression not fitting there.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of Latvian at level C (C1 or C2) or Latvian as a mother tongue.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Improved practical writing skills, paying special attention to the use of stylistically appropriate and fit means of expression.
Mastered and strengthened knowledge of practical stylistics and literary editing in Latvian.

Skills

Practical writing and editing skills fit and appropriate for the corresponding style (scientific, business, publicistic).

Competence

1. Oral and written knowledge of practical stylistics in Latvian mastered and/or strengthened.
2. Morphostylistic, lexicostylistic, text syntaxis skills to be used in a text of a specific style and genre mastered and/or strengthened.
3. Practical editing skills mastered.
