Objective

Give an insight into historical genesis and development various regulations of public life, division of the society and legal status, branches of law, institutes and courts up to recent times; identify key facts in the history of law in Latvia and abroad, major rights monuments and sources; and understand the historical process of law development in Latvia and abroad.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Understanding the relationship between the development of Latvia’s state and law in Latvia and social, political, economic and other processes in the society.

Skills

Ability to analyse, compare and work with different rights monuments, scientific and legal literature; ability to analyse various regularities of the development of a historical state, society and law; ability to perceive various problems and solutions thereof; understanding of the national legal system of Latvia as a part of the continental legal system; ability to find relationship between the past and the present.

Competence

Capable of focusing on the latest legal topicalities of the modern world and their historical regularities, able to draw up research work, present their opinion, substantiate it and put forward new ideas; able to expand their visions and generalise historical knowledge by linking it to the modern legal system.
