Course supervisor:Evita Legzdiņa
Study type:Part time, Full time
Course level:Bachelor
Target audience:Rehabilitation
Language:Latvian
Branch of science:Clinical Medicine; Health Care

Objective

• To gain knowledge of control mechanisms of human body movements and posture, functional anatomy and develop understanding of coordinated functioning of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems to ensure motions and keeping of posture.
• To acquire knowledge of and develop practical skills in palpating structures of the musculoskeletal system, qualitative and quantitative assessment of movements, correct selection of therapeutic exercises and their practical application.

Prerequisites

Standard anatomy, biomechanics of muscular and nervous systems, basics of physiotherapy relating to motor control theory, analysis of movements and general classification of exercises.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course the student should be able to describe functional anatomy of joints of the human body, identify structures involved in implementation of movements and keeping of posture and their coordinated work, define normal amount of movement and its quality, explain conditions determining choice of therapeutic exercises.

Skills

Upon completion of the course the student should be able to palpate bone ‘landmarks’ and soft tissues, evaluate movements in joints engaged in motion and posture keeping and type of muscle work, choose therapeutic exercises and use them to improve motor control in specific joints.

Competence

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to analyse movements of joints and muscle work necessary for various functional activities, plan and develop therapeutic exercises to improve the level of motor control.
