Preliminary Knowledge:
Basic knowledge of the Russian language is required (level A2 according to Common European Framework of Reference for Language Learning, Teaching and Assessment).
Objective:
To improve, develop and streamline students’ knowledge of Russian for communication, academic and professional purposes and to facilitate the acquisition of professional medical terminology for productive use.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
Hometasks with particular exercises; medical terminology acquisition. Creating student's medical terminology glossary. Short presentations on body organs and their functions. Analytic reading of short popular medical texts followed by writing a summary, presentation.
Assessment Criteria:
Active participation in classes, 80% class attendance, homework delivered in a high quality and on time. End of the term test – a written test to check functional language skills application – matching, gap filling tasks and multiple choice tasks, completing medical forms.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:On successful completion of the course students will be able to: • recognise familiar medical terminology in different types of text; • to provide either Russian explanation or Latvian translation of the terms; • to read a text related to medicine, find and highlight key words, the main idea, the necessary information in the text; • to name the parts of the body, the main organs and systems; describe deseases and their major symptoms; • to describe patient condition, course of the illness; • to recognise linguistic structures characteristic to scientific and popular science sources (noun formation, cases, agreement with adjectives; grammatical system of the verb in the active voice, the imperative; the subjunctive mood, participle and the infinitive, etc.).
Skills:After successful course complition students will be able to: • use appropriate medical terminology to interact with patients/clients and colleagues; • select medical terminology and make their own termininological glossary; • speak about the hospital, departments, medical staff, patient care, basic investigations; • find information related to anamnesis, complaints and character of pain, give advice, instructions and reassure the patient.
Competencies:Students will be able to deliver information about themselves, their studies and compare to medical studies in Russia; to perceive and deliver the necessary information related to patient condition; to express own opinion and put forward arguments on general medical issues; to form questions and ask them to a patient.
