About Study Course

Credit points / ECTS:3 / 4.5
Course supervisor:Dace Rezevska
Study type:Full time
Course level:Master's
Target audience:Life Science
Language:English, Latvian
Branch of science:Biology; Microbiology

Objective

To gain knowledge of distribution and spread of bacteria, fungi and viruses, their classification principles, morphology, pathogenic properties, interaction with host.

Prerequisites

Biology, anatomy, histology, physiology

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

To characterize microorganisms, to describe their distribution in the environment, to explain their pathogenicity and their role in the aetiology of infectious diseases and their interaction processes with the host.

Skills

Students will be able
- to collect, transport and examine clinical materials;
- to isolate and analyse pure cultures of pathogenic microorganisms;
- to evaluate pathogenesis of infectious diseases, as well as nosocomial infection risk in dental practice.

Competence

Combining theoretical knowledge and practical skills, the students will be able to apply these skills in unitary integrative understanding of the importance of bacterial and viral pathogenicity factors in the aetiology of diseases, and they will be able to apply them to the mechanisms of pathogenesis and interactions with the host.
