Preliminary Knowledge:
Anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, gymnastics and terminology.
Objective:
To acquaint students with the Pilates method, to promote the formation of practical skills and abilities in the execution of the elements.

Assessment
Unaided Work:
During the study period students independently or in groups perform and demonstrate Level 1 Pilates exercises, paying special attention to their proper execution technique and breathing.
Assessment Criteria:
Test method: attendance and active participation in practical classes, practical test, preparation of a small training programme.

Learning Outcomes
Knowledge:On completion of the study course students will have acquired knowledge and will: • define the concept of Pilates and its basic principles; • tell about the founder of Pilates gymnastics system and describe the popularity of this method in the world; • be able to explain Pilates gymnastics technique; • learn to formulate the eight basic principles of the Pilates method; • be able to explain the importance of proper breathing in the Pilates programme; • be able to name the main factors that improve health in Pilates programme; • outline the use of Pilates exercises for locomotor disorders; • select the exercises that are most suitable for each client; • substantiate the role of the power band in improving spine health; • describe the framework conditions for the Pilates programme; • know different exercises and lesson types.
Skills:As a result of the study course the student will be able to: • use Pilates exercises for health promotion and disease prevention; • create a simple Pilates training programme for people of different ages and genders; • choose and recommend the right exercises using the basic Pilates training principles; • apply and demonstrate proper breathing techniques in Pilates programme; • evaluate and apply relaxation techniques in the training programme; • explain and motivate themselves and the client to Pilates; • create a workout programme for 15 minutes; • apply and execute Pilates exercises by applying Pilates principles.
Competencies:Using the acquired knowledge and skills, students will be able to evaluate the proper Pilates exercise technique and the need to use it to improve health and physical fitness, as well as correctly execute Pilates basic movements and their modifications using Pilates basic principles of motion. The student should know and understand the theory, tasks and objectives of the Pilates exercise system.
