Objective

To develop skills and competences for assessing the risk of a patient's oral health and disease, practice evidence-based non-invasive and minimally invasive caries treatment and control techniques.

Prerequisites

Biology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, histology, embryology, dental anatomy, preventive dentistry I, preventive dentistry II, dental public health.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Will name the caries risk factors, indicators; will explain these terms.
Will describe the caries risk assessment procedure.
Will characterise and compare caries diagnostic methods.
Will explain prevention and early treatment methods of oral diseases.
Will classify and describe noninvasive and minimally invasive caries treatment methods.

Skills

Will diagnose caries with different methods, by combining them and synthesising the results; will be able to diagnose, assessing the stages and activity of carious lesions.
Will interview the patient and apply diagnostic methods to determine the risk factors for the disease.
Will assess caries risk with different methods.
Will differentiate caries, erosion, abrasion, atritium, abfraction, congenital and acquired dental hard tissue pathologies.
Will develop prevention and treatment plan of caries and other oral diseases.
Will communicate the findings of the examination and treatment plan with the patient.
Will apply caries preventive, non-invasive and minimally invasive treatment methods.

Competence

Will be able to independently assess the need for different caries diagnostic, detection, prevention and treatment methods, taking into consideration the needs of each patient; will be able to follow the scientific literature about new diagnostic and treatment tools and rational use of existing methods.
