Objective

The aim of the course is to deepen students' knowledge of the basic issues of linguistics, to help them focus better on theoretical resources, and to strengthen the skills of segmenting and analyzing different language units so that a student can perform a professional and research activity, and to independently outline his or her learning in the selected specialty.

Prerequisites

Knowledge and skills of the Latvian language acquired at the secondary school.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
• know the functions of language;
• understand the levels of language and their characteristic units;
• know the most popular theories of lingua genesis;
• identify the most important stages of writing;
• know the types of language classification.

Skills

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
• define which function of language a text is suitable for;
• classify units of language and characterize them by specific features;
• classify world languages according to various features.

Competence

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to distinguish and analyse units of language, use the most important terms of linguistics and know the main issues of linguistics.
