Objective

To introduce students to the basic concepts of pharmacogenetics, research methods and the application of pharmacogenetics tests in modern health care.

Prerequisites

In biology, pharmacology and human genetics.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

As a result of completing the study course, students acquire basic knowledge in the theory of pharmacogenetics, i.e. what is pharmacogenetics, what are the types and goals of pharmacogenetics research, how the characteristics of the human genome can affect the effect of medicinal products on the patient’s body and how medical personnel could predict these effects.

Skills

As a result of completing the study course, students acquire skills in evaluating the influence of heredity factors in cases of variations in drug action and the ability to search for a solution to the situation. Will be able to explain social and clinical perspectives on interindividual variability in responses to drug substances.

Competence

As a result of completing the study course, students gain competence in issues related to the application of human genome research for the provision of personalised pharmacotherapy and the creation of new pharmacogenetic tests, as well as ethical aspects of pharmacogenetics.
