Objective

To gain knowledge and understanding of public and environmental health aspects and their impact on individual and public health in the context of the practice of a functional specialist.

Prerequisites

Introduction to professional studies and research, biology, physiology, civil and environmental protection.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

As a result of successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
- to understand and explain the impact of environmental factors on human health and the possibilities for reducing pollution;
- to understand and explain the possibilities of reducing the risk factors of the work environment;
- understand and explain the frequency of diseases (incidence, prevalence);
- to understand and explain the factors influencing health and health habits of the Latvian population.

Skills

As a result of successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
- identify the most common environmental factors that can cause environmental diseases;
- identify work environment risk factors that may affect the health of employees and patients;
- to select, compile and use the most important information on public health and health habits of the population in Latvia;
- apply disease incidence estimates.

Competence

As a result of successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
- to participate in measures to reduce the impact of natural and work environment factors at their workplace;
- to analyze and interpret the public health situation and health habits of the Latvian population;
- interpret data from disease frequency estimates.
