Mikrobioloģijas un virusoloģijas institūts (MVI) ir zinātniskais institūts, kas RSU ietvaros patstāvīgi īsteno zinātnisko, pedagoģisko un konsultatīvo darbu medicīnas mikrobioloģijas, virusoloģijas, molekulārās bioloģijas, klīniskās imunoloģijas, imunoģenētikas, autoimūno slimību un biotehnoloģijas nozarē.

MVI veic pētījumus par vīrusu izplatību, darbības mehānismiem, infekcijas izraisītām vai asociētām slimībām un to patoģenēzi, identificējot diagnostikā un ārstniecības efektivitātes monitoringā lietojamos biomarķierus un iespējamās profilakses pieejas, kā arī pētniecisko darbu biotehnoloģijas jomā atbilstoši pētniecības aktualitātēm un vajadzībām.

Institūts īsteno nacionālos un starptautiskos zinātniskos grantus, programmas, pētnieciskos projektus un klīniskos pētījumus.

MVI ir tādu starptautisko organizāciju un asociāciju biedrs kā Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), European Society for Virology, International Association for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (IACFS/ ME) un American Society for Microbiology (ASM).
