Dental Anatomy and Karyology (ZTMVK_064)
About Study Course
Objective
Students acquire knowledge about the structure and morphology of permanent and primary teeth (incisors, canines, premolars and molars), their functions and form.
To develop students’ theoretical skills in order to recognize dental hard tissue disorders and make decisions about their prevention and management at individual and population levels.
Prerequisites
General knowledge of human anatomy, basics of terminology, Latin language basic knowledge, chemestry, biology.
Learning outcomes
As a result of studying dental anatomy, students acquire basic knowledge of dental anatomy, morphology and functionality.
As a result of studying cariology, the student:
- will describe the structure, functions, pathology of hard tissues of teeth,
- will define the role of local and general factors - microorganisms, carbohydrates, tooth-saliva interaction, fluorides, nutrition, socio-economic factors in the origin of caries and dental hard tissue pathologies;
- will classify the clinical manifestations of caries and dental hard tissue pathologies.
In Dental anatomy, students are able to identify each group of teeth in the upper and lower jaws, distinguish a tooth from the right and left side, distinguish primary and permanent teeth by general morphological characteristics.
In Cariology, the student will be able to:
- choose the appropriate treatment method and material for caries and dental hard tissue pathologies, observing indications and contraindications,
- assess the condition and prognosis of the patient's dental hard tissues, caries activity and caries risk,
-create a treatment plan, integrating the treatment into the overall oral cavity recovery plan
- evaluate treatment results and prognosis, expected possible complications, develop possible ones prevention of complications and, if necessary, to change the treatment plan.
Upon completion of the course students will be able to practically apply the acquired knowledge in dental anatomy, morphology and functionality. Will be able to explain each tooth group in the upper and lower jaws, differentiate between the right and left teeth, differentiate between primary teeth and permanent teeth according to the general morphological characteristics in everyday work as dental hygienist. On successful completion of the course Cariology, the students will be able to evaluate, prevent and control caries and other dental hard tissue disorders, to explain their integration in oral health system and interaction with other oral disorders and general health.
