Objective

To obtain knowledge of the chemical composition of the human body, biological functions of biocompounds – carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. To obtain knowledge and understanding of the chemical foundations of life processes, biochemistry of digestive processes, energy and plastic processes in the human body. To ensure that students acquire theoretical and practical skills by providing knowledge and understanding of the chemical foundations of life processes in the human body, as well as the dynamics of energy and plastic processes during physical loads. By practically learning the basic skills of biochemical research, the skills to make the correct menu. Main task of the study course – to give students a scientific basis for professional activity, foundations for the mastering of nutritional science, to develop skills for solving independently problems relating to physical activity (choosing the correct diet, understanding and promoting recovery processes, etc.). 

Prerequisites

Secondary or secondary special education within the framework of which organic and inorganic chemistry, biology has been acquired. It would be desirable to acquire biochemistry in close conjunction with the acquisition of physiological basics.Knowledge: the student has basic knowledge of general and organic chemistry; the structures and functions of the cell; understanding the basic principles of human anatomy and physiology; basic knowledge of biology and basic concepts of molecular biology.Skills: the student is able to use chemical terminology and symbols; to interpret simple schedules, tables and biochemical data; perform simple calculations (e.g. molarity, concentrations, pH); use scientific literature sources and digital information resources.Competencies: a student is able to integrate knowledge of chemistry, biology and physiology within the meaning of biochemical processes; is aware of the importance of biochemistry for health maintenance, disease development and treatment.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.1. Describes the chemical composition of the human body and the chemical foundations of life processes, including the chemical construction and biological functions of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids.
2. Explains the interconnectedness of metabolic processes and the dynamics of biochemical processes in the human body, highlighting the main energy sources of the body and the biochemicals and processes involved in energy production.
3. Analyse biochemical changes in the body at different intensities and characteristics during exercise and recovery.
4. Explain the mechanisms for the production of aerobic and anaerobic energy and their importance for physical exercise.
5. Justifies the biochemical mechanisms of strength, speed and endurance development and their use in the exercise process.
6. Assess the biochemical characteristics of children and adolescents in planning and organising physical load.

Skills

1.7. Perform simple analytical biochemical experiments, use laboratory vessels and hardware.
8. Analyse specific loads by energy-producing reactions and know what energy sources they use.

Competence

1.12. Analyze the results obtained: assess key blood biochemical indicators (lactate concentration, pH), compare with the normal at rest and fatigue, or literature data, indicate possible causes of deviation of biochemical parameters from the normal.
13. The basic principles of biochemistry shall be applied by analysing the interdependence of exercise, nutrition and functional state of the body.
