Objective

To provide the medical resident with an understanding of perioperative care of surgical patients undergoing thoracic surgery, as well as develop and improve their theoretical knowledge and specific skills in the application of anaesthetic methods in thoracic surgery.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Medical residents are able to demonstrate specific knowledge and understanding of medical theories on anaesthesia in vascular surgery, which meets the requirements of the specialty of anaesthesiologist, reanimatologist, which provides a basis for creative thinking in clinical practice and partly in research, as well as the ability to work in interdisciplinary interactions.
Medical residents must:
- be able to describe the physiological, pharmacological and clinical specifics of non-cardiac thoracic operations (lung and bronchial operations, mediastinal operations, thymus operations, etc.),
- be able to describe the choice of anaesthetic method, the choice of mode of artificial lung ventilation,
- be able to describe the absolute and relative indications for surgery with one-lung ventilation,
- be able to describe operations in special situations using jet ventilation mode: bronchopleural fistulas, empyema, tracheal resection.

Skills

1.Medical residents are able to demonstrate successful performance of the manipulations included in the course description in a clinical setting.
Medical residents must:
- be able to prepare the patient for surgery and anaesthesia,
- be able to perform endobronchial intubation,
- be able to prevent complications and provide analgesia in the early post-operative period.

Competence

1.At the end of the study course, the medical resident is familiar with perioperative care of surgical patients undergoing thoracic surgery, is able to make clinically sound decisions and act effectively in preparing the patient for surgery, providing anaesthesia and postoperative care.
