Objective

To ensure the acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in surgical oncology of abdominal cavity organs, with a special focus on colorectal surgery.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Diagnostic and treatment tactics of female genital tract cancer complications in abdominal cavity organs.

Skills

1.Indications for bowel resection. Principles of bowel resection and suture patterns in patients with oncogynecologic disease. Accidental bowel injury. Planned bowel resection, principles of gastrointestinal tract surgery, including effect of surgical manipulations and injuries on gastrointestinal tract. Primary and secondary bowel anastamoses, ileostomy, colostomy. Indications for surgical manipulations in patients with oncogynecologic disease. Use of diagnostic imaging for examination and treatment of patients with disturbances in gastrointestinal tract function. Ability to appropriately select patients for bowel surgery. Sigmoidoscopy, indications and technique. Ability to select small bowel resection site, principles of primary anastomosis construction, principles of ileostoma construction, appendectomy technique, ability to select large bowel resection site and colostoma construction. Ability to consult patients about benefits, risks and complications of bowel surgery. Preoperative stoma site marking, prescribing and interpreting preoperative investigations, adequate preoperative bowel preparation for patients who have undergone surgical intervention in the gastrointestinal tract.

Competence

1.Ability to prepare a patient for bowel surgery. Ability to interpret investigation results and predict the extent of surgical procedure. Ability to perform laparotomy and assess abdominal cavity organs, including liver, spleen, the greater omentum, appendix, peritoneum, pancreas, small and large intestines. Ability to notice injury of bowel serosa, perform suture repair of a bowel serosal injury. Ability to assist operations and manipulations: small intestine anastomosis construction, construction of ileostoma and colostoma, enbloc resection with rectosigmoidal part of the colon, sigmoidoscopy. Ability to consult patients about stoma care.
Analyse results and complications of investigations and treatment. Participate in interdisciplinary councils and provide evidence based treatment strategy for an oncogynecologic patient.
