The Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) China Studies Centre is happy to share that Emma Ramsey from the University of Chicago is undergoing an internship at the Centre this summer. She is a proud Latvian-American and New Mexican who is looking forward to promoting joint Baltic-US relations in the future, given her unique background and experience. Here is a short conversation with Emma about her interests and her experience at RSU so far.

What attracted you to the internship opportunity at the RSU China Studies Centre?

I was drawn to intern at RSU’s China Studies Centre because its location in the heart of the Baltic States offers a unique vantage point for exploring my primary interests in international relations, namely Baltic security and China.

What is your research focus and how will your time at RSU help you delve deeper into your area of interest?

Currently I’m researching how US and People’s Republic of China (PRC) international legal interpretations, specifically regarding the South China Sea dispute, are indicative of their wider international policy strategies and the seemingly emerging bipolar hegemonic order. My time at RSU has been extremely helpful in advancing my research interests! Dr. Una Bērziņa-Čerenkova has been incredibly supportive and helpful in guiding my research and preparing it for international and academic audiences, as well as providing the opportunity to publish my work as a blog. My fellow interns have also been an amazing resource, and it’s been great to support each other and find the connections between all our individual research initiatives.

Are there any specific things you enjoy about interning in Riga?

I’ve really enjoyed my time interning in Riga! Latvia has such a vibrant culture (and amazing food), and I’ve loved getting to explore everything and anything over the past few months! I’m also in the process of learning the Latvian language, and there’s no better place to learn than by being surrounded by native speakers in Riga.

What are some of the opportunities you have taken advantage of while here that you particularly enjoyed?

Some opportunities I’ve taken advantage of while in Riga include attending 2025 NATO StratCom, the 2025 World Latvian Economics and Innovations Forum, visiting the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and meeting UN Special Rapporteur for Belarus Mr. Nils Muižnieks. These opportunities have allowed me to dive deep into Latvian foreign policy and internal development strategies, as well as explore personal international relations and human rights related interests.

Why would you recommend others to take part in internship opportunities at the RSU China Studies Centre?

I would highly recommend taking part, as it offers unparalleled opportunities to connect with academics and policy practitioners in Latvia. Dr Bērziņa-Čerenkova is, without doubt, one of the most brilliant people I have ever met and an exceptional mentor. The intern community is equally inspiring, and I can genuinely say that I will leave my summer in Latvia with lifelong friends.
