Rankings

The 2026 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, which annually evaluate the performance of more than 3,000 higher education institutions in research, contribution to education, international collaboration, and impact on the private sector, have been published. Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) is the only higher education institution in Latvia to have improved its position in this prestigious ranking this year, moving up from the 1501+ band to 1201–1500. A total of 2,191 universities are included in the ranking, almost 100 more than last year.

Based on publicly available data, RSU consistently ranks third among Latvian higher education institutions, behind the University of Latvia (LU) and Riga Technical University (RTU), whose positions in the ranking have remained unchanged this year (1001–1200). Fourth place nationally is held by the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies, which continues to occupy the 1501+ position.

RSU's rise in the ranking can be explained primarily by relative improvements in segments related to research quality and research environment.

Research quality

In this category, RSU has climbed more than 100 positions, ranking 1,454th in the world (previously 1,558th) and second in Latvia. The number of points earned has increased from 31 to 39.1 (out of a maximum of 100), marking a significant improvement. This category is based on several indicators related to the citation rates and academic impact of scientific publications from 2020 to 2024. Given RSU’s goal-oriented approach to publishing in higher-quality journals, this positive outcome is logical, though not guaranteed, as it has been achieved in a highly competitive environment.

Research environment

By improving its score from 15.7 to 16.9, RSU now ranks 1,124th in this category (last year – 1,146th). This result is based on the amount of research funding, researcher productivity, and the reputation of the university’s research within academic circles.

We have also improved our score in segments related to the quality of teaching and impact on the private sector (Industry).

Teaching

The score improved from 17.5 to 18.5, allowing RSU to move up from 1,736th to 1,725th place. The result is based on the university’s institutional income, staff-to-student ratio, doctorates-awarded-to-academic-staff ratio, doctorate-to-bachelor’s ratio, as well as its teaching reputation within academic circles.

Industry

The score improved from 24.3 to 25, although the ranking fell slightly (from 1,503rd to 1,575th). The result is based on the volume of research income from industry and the number of patents citing the university’s research.

As usual, we perform best in the International Outlook category, which is based on the proportion of international students, the proportion of international staff, and international collaboration in scientific publications. We rank 519th in the world in this category, although our score has fallen slightly (from 65.4 to 64.6).
