On 14 April, the Constitutional Court and Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) signed a cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening the development of legal science and enhancing the quality of research in Latvia. The agreement establishes closer dialogue between the Constitutional Court and academia, creating a platform where science and judicial practice interact to address legal issues of public importance.

‘To promote the development of legal science and research of public importance, professional cooperation is essential. The agreement ensures a close link between theory and practice. The Constitutional Court draws on scientific research in its work, and its judgments serve as important material in both teaching and research. This cooperation will enhance the quality of legal education and foster innovation in legal research,’ emphasised Irēna Kucina, President of the Constitutional Court.

Under the agreement, both parties commit to advancing legal research, encouraging the involvement of law students and doctoral candidates in addressing urgent legal issues, and strengthening collaboration between the Constitutional Court and academia within the teaching and learning process.

‘Today’s legal science must be able to respond to the rapidly evolving challenges facing society. Therefore, cooperation with the Constitutional Court is of particular importance. It enables our academic community to engage with real legal matters of national relevance, enhances research quality, and improves students’ understanding of practical legal application,’ stressed Prof. Pētersons.

‘Cooperation with the Constitutional Court is a significant step towards strengthening constitutional security by drawing on the academic community’s potential. Researchers play a crucial role not only in fostering legal awareness in society, but also in seeking high-quality solutions for the country’s future,’ noted Assoc. Prof. Karina Palkova, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences (pictured).

This agreement marks an important milestone in the cooperation between science and practice, where academic knowledge is applied for the benefit of society, and the judiciary receives valuable support from the research and academic environment.
