Although there are still several weeks to go till the starting shot for the Lattelecom Riga marathon race, Riga Stradiņš University has already hit two records – the team of RSU runners has considerably outpaced the participation figures of previous years and the number of our runners to compete in the classic marathon distance will be higher than ever.

Last year's marathon recorded 151 runners representing RSU. This year there will be 255 RSU runners competing in various race categories, 12 of them applying for the official marathon distance of 42 km. There are 95 registrations for the half marathon distance and 104 runners will compete in the 10 km race. Therewith RSU retains a stable position among the 10 largest national marathon teams participating in the event.

There are numerous strong and passionate runners among RSU students, academic and administrative staff. For example the Dean of the Faculty of Rehabilitation, Assoc. Prof. Signe Tomsone runs a marathon and around eight half marathons on a yearly basis. Whereas in 2015 a physiotherapy study programme 3rd year student Alma Vītola became the winner of one of the world’s toughest endurance races – 260 km Jungle Marathon through the Amazon rainforests in Brazil. Currently Alma is training for two important races – Cesis Eco Trail (114 km) and 24 hour-race in the World Rogaining Championships to be held in Latgale at Lake Rāzna.

The 27th Lattelecom Riga Marathon will take place on the 14 May. The participation record was beaten last year when various distances were run by 33 590 participants from 65 countries. RSU as a university with the largest number of foreign students in the Baltic region traditionally has been among the most multi-national teams. Although the majority of RSU team members come from Latvia, this year the university will be represented also by runners from nine other countries: Germany, Finland, India, Israel, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

RSU team’s participation in the event is coordinated by RSU Sports Club.
