Together with their international colleagues, researchers from Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) will explore new growth opportunities and search for alternative solutions for Latvia’s development at the World Congress of Latvian Scientists. On the first day of the congress – 18 June – RSU researchers will participate in a panel discussion on Safety and information space whereas latest developments in the area of social sciences will be discussed on 19 June. In the medical and health sciences session, RSU will be represented in the form of participants and also by members of the leadership team, as content development of the session has been entrusted to medical professional, Texas University Professor Uģis Gruntmanis in conjunction with Professor Aivars Lejnieks. On the final day of the congress – June 20 – at a forum titled “Latvia’s formula 2050. Scenarios for development” RSU rector Professor Aigars Pētersons will report on the synthesis of education and technology. 

The IV World Congress of Latvian Scientists will be held in Riga from 18 – 20 June with the objective to strengthen Latvia’s scientific potential with national safety and wellbeing as a central theme. The congress is organised by the Ministry of Education and Science and will bring together over 550 researchers and strategic partners not only from Latvia, but also USA, Australia, Argentina, Columbia, Great Britain, Germany and the Scandinavian countries.

RSU professor, chair of the medical and healthcare session of the congress A.Lejnieks sees the added value particularly in networking opportunities among researchers, industry representatives, and entrepreneurs, “These three days will be a platform to make and strengthen relationships to attain common goals and to launch research projects. The long-term effects of the congress will be seen in cross-border cooperation in the form of joint research, projects and promotion theses”, A.Lejnieks is convinced of the productivity of the event and hopes to see not only researchers of different generations in the Ziedonis Hall of the National Library of Latvia, but also students, representatives of the industries concerned, entrepreneurs and institution leaders.

In the medical and healthcare panel, 15 reports are planned, selected on the basis of the parity principle, from researchers residing in Latvia and abroad. In this section RSU will be represented by this year’s winner of the Time for Ziedonis award, Professor Maija Dambrova, endocrinologist, Associate Professor Ilze Konrāde, paediatrician,  Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Associate Professor Jana Pavāre, Director of the Augusts Kirhenšteins Institute of Microbiology and Virology Professor Modra Murovska and reanimatologist, RSU lecturer Reinis Balmaks.  

On the first day of the congress RSU will be represented by Dean of the Faculty of Communication, Professor Anda Rožukalne whereas in the social sciences session on the second day the floor will be given to RSU Professor Sergejs Kruks, Dean of the Faculty of European Studies Andris Sprūds and head of the Master’s study programme Social Anthropology, Klāvs Sedlenieks. 

In conjunction with the congress a number of parallel events will be held, e.g. on 19 June, ResearchSlam will organise a meeting with young researchers (post-doctoral fellows) to exchange information on research topicalities in Latvia in a simple, attractive and understandable way. There will be interactive exhibitions, open lectures, various competitions for doctoral students and post-doctorates, visits to research institutions and universities.
