The world's day of meningitis helps raise awareness of meningitis - a potentially deadly disease that can kill or cause disability throughout a few hours. Meningitis remains a major global public health problem, causing up to 5 million cases each year, including epidemics of new strains that spread between countries and around the world. Seventy-third World Health Assembly approved a global plan to overcome meningitis by 2030, paving the way for the implementation of multisectoral, integrated intervention measures to achieve sustained integrated prevention and control of meningitis in order to accelerate and long-term reduction of deaths, epidemics, recognition of the long-term consequences of meningitis, and concerted action to mitigate disability and support for affected people and their families.
