Objective

To acquire knowledge of the distribution, classification principles, morphology, pathogenic properties of micro-organisms, fungi and viruses and their interaction with the human body.

Prerequisites

Biology, anatomy, histology, physiology.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.After completing the study course, students will be able to describe common micro-organisms, viruses, fungi and prions, their distribution in the environment, their pathogenicity and their role in the development of infectious diseases and their interaction with the macro-organism. Students will be able to describe the immune system, its main mechanisms and its theoretical role in the destruction and neutralisation of infectious agents.

Skills

1.Students will be able to examine clinical material containing bacteria, to identify and isolate a pure culture of micro-organisms, to diagnose it, to define the sensitivity of the isolated pure culture to antibiotics in order to assess the sensitivity of the identified micro-organisms to antibiotics. Will acquire skills in the assessment of the pathogenesis of infectious diseases.

Competence

1.Combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills, students will be able to apply this knowledge in a single integrative understanding of the role of bacterial and viral pathogenicity factors in disease aetiology, to relate them to the mechanisms of pathogenesis and interactions with host immune mechanisms.
