Objective

To provide the medical resident with an understanding of perioperative care of surgical patients undergoing abdominal surgery, as well as improve their theoretical knowledge and specific skills in the application of anaesthetic methods in abdominal surgery.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Medical residents must:
- be able to describe the surgical patient preparation plan for acute and elective abdominal surgery;
- be able to describe the pharmacological properties of medicinal products used in premedication;
- be able to describe the pharmacological properties of drugs used for maintenance of anaesthesia, analgesia, myorelaxation;
- be able to describe the indications and contraindications for regional anaesthesia and technique thereof;
- be able to describe monitoring techniques that can be used during anaesthesia.

Skills

1.Medical residents must:
- be able to examine the surgical patient before anaesthesia and surgery, assess the degree of surgical risk in case of elective and acute surgery (by completing an examination report);
- be able to prepare patients for surgery and anaesthesia;
- be able to prepare the workstation in the operating room;
- be able to prepare the anaesthetic machine and monitors;
- be able to provide general anaesthesia during abdominal surgery;
- be able to perform spinal, epidural and combined spinal-epidural anaesthesia, as well as regional anaesthesia in combination with general anaesthesia;
- be able to assess vital signs during surgery and anaesthesia;
- be able to ensure patient safety in the post-operative period;
- be able to select and prescribe a method of postoperative analgesia.

Competence

1.At the end of the study course, the medical resident is familiar with perioperative surgical patient care, is able to make informed decisions when preparing a patient for surgery, and able to select and provide anaesthesia in abdominal surgery under the guidance of a physician entitled to teach.
