RSU joined the Regional Innovation Scheme in the area of health in 2018, which is managed by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology's Health Knowledge and Innovation Community (EIT Health). The University currently serves as the EIT Health RIS Hub in Latvia.

The goal of the hub is to enhance health innovation capacity in Latvia. Its activities seek to engage various regional stakeholders in EIT Health programmes and develop regional innovation eco-system through the integrated knowledge triangle model.

EIT Health, a European public-private partnership in the area of healthcare, was established by more than 150 partners representing the leading European companies, universities, research and development centres, hospitals and other organizations. The role of this partnership is to build a future healthcare eco-system that will enable European citizens to live longer and healthier lives. EIT Health upgrades the skills of healthcare professionals throughout Europe by investing in Europe's best talents and facilitates the commercialisation of innovative health products/solutions within the EU.

The second event of this year's EIT Health Morning Health Talks series took place on 14 November 2024. As in the first event, we continued to focus on Open Innovation: Collaborative Pathways, Alliances and Networks, getting an insight into open innovation alliances and how these alliances can contribute to data sharing in sandbox environments.

On 25 October, Rīga 1st Hospital hosted the hackathon 'The Big Four: from Space to Patient', which challenged teams to find uses for the four buildings of the hospital. The aim was to develop the scope of the hospital's services and improve the patient experience in the hospital.

The EIT Health i-Days health innovation event for Latvian university students took place in Riga on 10 - 11 October 2024, inspiring them to get involved in healthcare innovation and start-ups. The winning team, team Linky, are students from Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and Riga Technical University (RTU) who have been looking for a solution to a challenge from the Children's Hospital to provide effective palliative care for children.

Dace Lešinska EIT Health

With the aim to promote the development of digital skills in the healthcare sector, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) in partnership with Riga TechGirls will provide a free digital skills and innovations masterclass programme Cilvēcīgi par tehnoloģijām (Technology Made Human). The masterclass is meant for healthcare professionals, representatives of start-ups, and anyone who wants to work in this sector in the future. The online programme consists of 24 theoretical sessions and 4 practical sessions over the course of three months and is an opportunity to improve knowledge of the use of different tools and technologies in healthcare and to gain useful skills for everyday use.

Past Events

Monitoring of various health indicators, personalised nutrition plans and reminders about the most important health checks-ups - these are just some of the solutions created by students to improve public health. Students from all over Latvia met at the i-Days event in Riga on 26-27 October 2023 organised by the health community of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT Health), at which they searched for ideas for preventive health.
