Objective

To prepare laboratory doctors capable of performing a wide spectrum of examinations for diagnostics of bacterial infections, incl. tuberculosis, using modern technologies and equipment. To use examination algorithms based on international guidelines and recommendations, to interpret the obtained results. To master internal and external quality control methods for diagnostics of bacterial infectious diseases.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.- to evaluate advantages of different groups of diagnostic methods;
- to describe principles of diagnostic methods used in bacteriology;
- to characterise properties of pathogenic cocci and pathogenic groups of intestinal microorganisms;
- to evaluate the use of immunoenzymatic and molecular biological methods in bacteriology;
- to describe rules of sampling biological material for diagnostics of bacterial infections.

Skills

1.- to prepare samples for bacteriological examination;
- to perform inoculation of the material to be examined, sampling of colonies for pure culture;
- to perform microscopy of stained preparations;
- to determine sensitivity of microorganisms to antibiotics and to interpret the results
- to use conventional and unified method algorithm for identification of microorganisms.

Competence

1.To perform diagnostic examinations of human biological material for diagnostics of bacterial infections. Based on exercise results to perform diagnostics, differential diagnostics of diseases, to interpret results and to recommend further examination activity to clinicians.
