Objective

To provide knowledge about the most common clefts in the maxillofacial region: their aetiology, incidence and rehabilitation.
To provide an overview of modern surgical treatment possibilities, their timing and clinical considerations.
To create an understanding of modern approaches in integrated care of patients with clefts.
To promote understanding about rehabilitation and needs of patients with clefts.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Knowledge about incidence and aetiology of facial clefts.
Knowledge about interdisciplinary treatment approaches to patients with facial clefts.
Understanding of the principles of operation of the Cleft Centre in rehabilitation of children with facial clefts.
To know the latest surgical treatment methods in facial cleft closure.

Skills

1.To be able to evaluate growth and development of a child with a facial cleft.
To be able to determine which surgical treatment methods have been used in rehabilitation of a patient with clefts.
To know how to orthodontically prepare a patient before certain surgical manipulations.

Competence

1.To be able to recognise a patient with a congenital facial cleft at any stage of rehabilitation.
Is competent to understand the conducted rehabilitation, to evaluate results and to involve in further patient care.
Is competent to fully involve in integrated care of a patient with a facial cleft as an orthodontic specialist.
