Objective

To ensure acquisition of basic theoretical knowledge and to familiarise with the methodology of practical work in interventional radiology according to the requirements of the radiology speciality regulations to prepare doctors for certification in radiologist’s speciality according to regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.• To formulate and classify vascular anatomy and the most common vascular anatomical variants.
• To recognise, formulate and sequentially arrange the most common pathologies that are diagnosed and treated with interventional radiology manipulations.
• To name, explain and briefly describe the most common manipulations used in interventional radiology and the risks associated with them.
• To name, classify and briefly describe the pharmacology of local anaesthetics and intravenous anaesthetics, basic principles of administration, and patient monitoring.
• To sequentially identify and describe the basic principles of patient resuscitation techniques in case of acute conditions.

Skills

1.• To distinguish between, interpret and explain basic vascular catheterisation manipulations in interventional radiology under the direct supervision of a teaching physician.
• To demonstrate, explain and apply the basic principles of peripheral arteriography, abscess, pleural drainage, nephrostomy, biliary interventional radiology manipulations under the direct supervision of a teaching physician.

Competence

1.• To evaluate, substantiate, and justify basic vascular catheterisation manipulations, peripheral arteriography under the direct supervision of a teaching physician.
• To plan, interpret and justify vascular interventional procedures, including PTA, thrombolysis, thrombectomy, embolisation, stenting, venous interventional procedures under the direct supervision of a teaching physician.
