Objective

The aim of the programme is to ensure the acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in accordance with the requirements for the specialty of Traumatologist – orthopaedist in order to prepare the doctor for independent work and certification in the specialty of orthopaedist in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Upon completion of studies, the student will demonstrate thorough knowledge and understanding of children and adult musculoskeletal trauma and orthopaedic problems, acute surgical and internal medicine conditions. The student will be able to examine patient independently, critically evaluate the symptoms, give the diagnosis and justify it. The student will be able to explain the chosen treatment methods and describe and explain principles of his action.

Skills

1.1. After gathering patients clinical and additional examination data, the student will be able to give a proper diagnosis and choose the appropriate method of treatment:
a) take the patient's medical history
b) draw up a plan for examinations needed
c) interpret the results of radiological and clinical examinations
2. Apply treatment methods:
a) use appropriate transport immobilisation
b) perform: - puncture of large joints and cavities,
- closed reposition of various bone fractures and dislocations and apply adequate immobilization,
c) define indications for applying external fixator and able to apply it
d) do primary or secondary wound closure, skin flap plastic
e) do tendon suture or plastic
f) do debridement and amputation of the extremity
g) choose adequate fixation (osteosynthesis) of fracture, and be able to perform it
h) choose adequate treatment method for treating pseudarthrosis.
2. Able to diagnose infection of musculoskeletal system and joints (septic arthritis, osteomyelitis) and choose the most appropriate conservative or surgical treatment method.
3. Recognise different benign and malignant tumours of the musculoskeletal system. Draw up an examination plan for getting precise diagnosis and choose the appropriate conservative or surgical treatment method.
4. Able to recognise complications of systemic and local surgical or conservative treatment and prevent them or choose appropriate treatment.
5. Able to predict the outcome in patients with musculoskeletal trauma depending on its severity.

Competence

1.The student will be able to analyse, see interrelationship, evaluate and solve problems in the field of traumatology and orthopaedics, at the highest professional level, while continuously improving their knowledge in specific and related fields.
The student will be able to:
a) correctly diagnose patients with musculoskeletal trauma and related diseases
b) recognise different systemic and local complications of musculoskeletal trauma and diseases,
c) interpret data obtained by different examination methods,
d) give a differential diagnosis of orthopaedic diseases,
e) draw up a proper treatment plan based on the objective examination data gained,
f) explain the need for the chosen treatment method,
g) evaluate the results of the chosen treatment method.
