Simulations in Traumatology, Orthopaedics (RTO_038)
About Study Course
Objective
To ensure acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills using simulations according to the requirements of the traumatologist-orthopaedist speciality regulation to prepare the doctor for independent works and certification in orthopaedist’s speciality according to laws and regulations of the Republic of Latvia.
Learning outcomes
1.During the study course, medical residents learn about the set-up of a simulated operating room, the equipment used and basic surgical instruments, learn to perform sterile pre-operative hand preparation, as well as recognise the sterile field and the principles of sterility in the operating room, learn various surgical wound management techniques, various suturing techniques, learn how to place tendon sutures, learn how to assess and primarily treat polytrauma patients in a simulated clinical situation in the Admission Unit according to the protocol, learn about arthroscopic surgical instruments, application techniques thereof, learn how to create access to the knee joint and evacuate loose bodies from the joint using the arthroscopic technique.
1.After completing the study course, the medical resident knows how to perform surgical treatment of wounds, closure with various suture techniques, and tendon sutures for uncomplicated tendon tears. The medical resident understands the principles of the sterile field in the operating room, recognises and is able to use basic surgical instruments in the operating room. As a result of simulated situations, the medical resident learns the principles for assessing and protocols for examining a polytrauma patient, is able to recognise life-threatening conditions and prescribe additional examinations depending on the work diagnosis, learns to make important decisions and work in a team. The medical resident is able to make arthroscopic access to the knee joint, use arthroscopic equipment correctly, and remove a loose body from the joint.
1.To learn the basic skills needed for safe and sterile work in the operating room. To practically learn surgical treatment of wounds, various suturing techniques. To evaluate a polytrauma patient and prescribe the necessary additional examinations and treatment. To learn the basic skills of arthroscopy by modelling on the knee joint.
