Aotearoa/New Zealand was among the first countries to adopt social marketing as a strategy to influence both community-level and individual behaviour change. This presentation explores the evolution and development of social marketing in New Zealand from its early beginnings in the 1980s. It examines the field’s progress, successes, and challenges from both practitioner and academic perspectives.
The presentation will highlight several notable campaigns widely regarded as effective examples of social marketing in New Zealand. It then turns to contemporary social change issues currently affecting the country and offers a comparative reflection on how these challenges might align with those facing social marketers in Latvia.

About the lecturer
Jayne Krisjanous is an Associate Professor in the School of Marketing and International Business at the School of Business and Government, Victoria University of Wellington. New Zealand, Jayne is an experienced teacher at undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA levels and currently teaches courses in marketing communications, consumer behaviour, health services marketing and social marketing. Her extensive experience in the healthcare industry, in both clinical, management and teaching settings, has allowed her to foster an academic and consulting involvement with this industry. She currently supervises post-graduate research students in both Marketing and Midwifery. Jayne holds a Bachelor of Nursing, a BCA Honours (Marketing), an MBA, and PhD. Jayne is also a Registered Nurse and Registered Midwife (not currently practising in Nursing or Midwifery) and holds an Advanced Diploma in Nursing. Although a New-Zealand born “Kiwi”, Jayne is proud of her Latvian citizenship (by descent) and feels a strong bond to Latvia and her people.
