The Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Institute of Public Health invites you to a special meeting with distinguished neuroscientist Prof. Claudio Cuello. The meeting will take place on 23 March at the Institute of Public Health on 9 Kronvalda bulvāris.

During the meeting, the professor will briefly introduce his scientific journey, current research projects, and will be open to discussions about potential new international research collaborations. This event will be an excellent opportunity for networking, exchanging ideas, and expanding international cooperation.

About the lecturer

Prof. Claudio Cuello is a globally recognised neuroscientist whose work has significantly advanced our understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and neurodegenerative processes. After beginning his career in Buenos Aires, he worked at the University of Cambridge in the MRC Neurochemical Pharmacology Unit and later at the University of Oxford, where he served as a senior researcher and E.P. Abraham Fellow.

From 1985 to 2000, Prof. Cuello headed the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics at McGill University, and since 2000 he has been the university’s first Charles E. Frosst/Merck Chair in Pharmacology. He has published more than 500 scientific papers, is recognised as a “Highly Cited Neuroscientist,” and has an h-index of 108.

His most significant contributions include:

  • pioneering work in catecholamine detection and immunohistochemical methods;
  • major contributions to the study of peptidergic neurons;
  • research demonstrating the role of intraneuronal Aβ accumulation and the early inflammation it triggers in the
  • development of Alzheimer’s disease;
  • new discoveries about NGF metabolic disturbances in Alzheimer’s disease and Down syndrome;
  • innovative translational activities, including patents and the founding of the biotechnology company MediMabs.

He has received numerous international awards, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, an Officer of the Order of Canada, and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in the United Kingdom.
