Objective

To give students knowledge about epidemiology, aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnostics and course of mental and behavioural disorders; to give knowledge about emergency case management in psychiatry. Give knowledge about organisation and practical work of metal health care; to give knowledge about ethical and legal principles in psychiatry; and distributions of competence between different specialists when it comes to planning and organising health care of mentally ill patients.
To develop empathetic attitude towards patients and their family members. To reflect on and to improve their own attitudes towards mental health problems.

Prerequisites

• Basic knowledge in physiology;
• Psychology, developmental and medical psychology;
• Neurology (disorders of central and peripheral nervous system, extra pyramidal syndromes);
• Ethics in medicine (specific ethical issues in psychiatry).

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.Knowledge about epidemiology, aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnostics and course (according to ICD-10) of mental and behavioural disorders; mental health promotion, formulates clinical symptoms and diagnosis and course of mental illness (according to ICD-10), ethical and legal aspects of mental illness care and rehabilitation can be defined.

Skills

1.Is able to recognize, assess and describe the basic psychiatric symptoms in general medical practice, evaluate and plan the type of patient care and rehabilitation.
Able to form a purposeful conversation with the patient; recognize and describe the symptoms of the disease; justify the need for rehabilitation. Evaluate the dynamics of the disease during rehabilitation.
Is able to create an emphatic interviewing style for working with patients with mental disorders, to be aware of the importance of therapeutic relationships in psychiatry.

Competence

1.Able to take the responsibility appropriate to the profession for the patient's treatment and rehabilitation, cooperate with the patient's rehabilitation team, recommend and substantiate their views on the patient's condition and appropriate specialized rehabilitation methods.
