Objective

Give knowledge of law enforcement authorities in Latvia, their institutional jurisdiction and their functions. Develop the knowledge, skills and abilities of students in the field of the subject matter “Legal Institutions”, in line with the intended learning outcomes.

Prerequisites

European Union Law.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

The student knows law enforcement authorities, their functions and role, institutional hierarchy; is able to demonstrate the inherent basic and specialised knowledge of law enforcement institutions and a critical understanding of this knowledge; is familiar with the development trends of the sector.

Skills

The student is able to analyse, synthesize and evaluate, choose the appropriate law enforcement authority to solve a particular problem; is able to take decisions and find creative solutions in changing or uncertain circumstances. The student is able to express and analytically describe information, problems and solutions in the field of law enforcement authorities using the theoretical bases and skills acquired, to explain them and discuss them reasonably with both professionals and non-professionals.

Competence

The student is able to find, independently or within working groups, a solution to the relevant factual circumstances; to improve their skills independently, to select and process independently the legal information necessary for the fulfilment of the tasks. The student is able to take decisions and solve problems.
