Objective

The course is designed for students of the 5th and 6th year of studies at the Faculty of Medicine. Upon successful completion of the study course, the student will have mastered the basics of paediatric neurology, which will provide the opportunity to acquire the necessary skills and attitudes to work with children in medical residency.

Prerequisites

Successfully completed planned studies in preclinical and clinical courses during the 1st to 4th year of studies at the Faculty of Medicine, including paediatrics and neurology.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will have acquired knowledge that will allow them to focus on normal psychomotor development of the child and normal sleep physiology. Students will learn advanced differential diagnosis for sleep disorders, paroxysmal disorders and acute conditions in paediatric neurology. Students will acquire basic knowledge of epilepsy, neuromuscular diseases, infectious diseases of the nervous system and headaches in children. Understanding of the development, diagnosis and fundamental principles of treatment will be developed.

Skills

• Neurological examination.
• Neurological examination in new-borns and infants.
• Ability to evaluate the psychomotor development of the child.
• Interpretation of neurophysiological and radiological diagnostic techniques in paediatric neurology at basic level.
• Indications and interpretation of the application of lumbar puncture.
• Ability to recognise and draw up an examination and treatment plan for the most common neurological diseases in children.

Competence

Medical students will be able to use both theoretical knowledge and practical skills and communication skills in working with neurological patients. The competence developed will be universally applicable not only during studies but also in further work with patients.
