Objective

To ensure the acquisition and improvement of theoretical knowledge and practical skills in palliative care of adults, according to the requirements of palliative care specialty, in order to prepare the doctor for certification in palliative care specialty according to the regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

1.You will gain knowledge and be able to navigate: 1) palliative care for adults, 2) deontology, 3) communication with seriously ill and terminal patients and their relatives, 4) legal aspects of care.

Skills

1.1) to provide professional specialised emergency and long-term medical symptomatic and pathogenetic care, 2) to prescribe and implement the necessary diagnostic, treatment, care and rehabilitation measures in palliative care, 3) to identify and solve social, mental and existential problems, 4) to communicate with a variety of patients and their relatives, colleagues and be part of a team to provide comprehensive patient care, 5) to advise patients and relatives on non-medical care, 6) to communicate with the media about the role and national importance of palliative care, 7) to communicate with and provide advice to doctors of other specialties.

Competence

1.Independently carries out palliative care and advises other specialists on palliative care. During the residency, the prospective palliative care specialist is not entitled to prescribe reimbursable oncology medicines. During the residency, after obtaining a certificate of good clinical practice, the prospective palliative care doctor is eligible to participate in clinical trials as a research assistant. After completing the residency, passing the final examinations and defending the thesis, the medical resident obtains a certificate of palliative care doctor in accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Latvia and competences in accordance with the specialty regulations.
