Waste monitoring

RSU is tracking various types of waste (plastic, paper, food, hazardous waste) sorted on site, as well as waste that gets recycled or sent to landfill.

Waste reduction accomplishments

  • Eliminated single-use plastic cupsStudents and staff are encouraged to bring their own reusable bottles and mugs, or use the ceramic mugs provided in shared kitchens.
  • Expanded drinking water infrastructureSince 2012, 69 water refill stations have been installed across 17 university buildings, reducing reliance on plastic bottles.
  • Prioritised reuse of furniture and equipmentRSU considers existing items before purchasing new ones. For example, when seminar rooms at the Medical Education Technology Centre were converted into simulation rooms, the existing furniture was efficiently relocated to the Social Sciences Research Centre and the Student Hostel in Mežciems.
  • Installed recycling bins across the campus.Separate bins are provided for paper and cardboard (marked blue), plastic and metal (yellow), and general waste (grey).
  • Increased digitalisationAdministrative processes are increasingly streamlined to minimise paper use.
