The World Health Organization’s Mental Health Day is celebrated in October every year. The interdisciplinary theme selected for this year is a topic of major importance to society - Focus on suicide prevention.

Close to 800 000 people die by suicide every year – that is one person every 40 seconds. In a global context, Latvia still ranks among the three countries with the highest suicide rate: one person chooses to end their life by suicide every day. Suicide is a global problem and effective and evidence-based interventions to prevent suicide and suicide attempts can be implemented on both a societal and individual level. There are indications that for each person who died there may have been more than 20 others attempting suicide.

To turn the spotlight on this problem and on the opportunities we have to help people who are at risk to commit suicide the Department of Psychiatry and Narcology of the RSU Faculty of Medicine will organise the conference Reducing Suicide Risk – a Major Challenge and Possible Solutions in Latvia in cooperation with Latvian Psychiatric Association. The event will be held on 18 October in the RSU Great Hall.

Among the speakers is world-renowned expert Professor David V. Sheehan, Distinguished University Health Professor Emeritus, Medical College, University of South Florida, Distinguished Life Fellow, American Psychiatric Association. Ilze Viņķele, the Minister for Health of the Republic of Latvia, will address the audience at the opening of the conference.

Mental health care professionals, RSU students and residency students as well as anyone interested are welcome to attend the conference.
