Synopsis

In this lecture, we will first talk about metabolomics – the study of small molecule metabolites, our main focus being the intermediates and products of metabolism in clinically important biofluids and tissue types, their identification and quantification using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry and the bioinformatics analyses pipelines of these data. In the second part, we will explore the human gut microbiome, briefly considering its qualitative and quantitative composition and the different environmental factors (e.g., our diet and medications) and disease states that can influence it. We will compare two different high-throughput analyses approaches of the microbiome and their state-of-the-art bioinformatics analyses pipelines: 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing allowing the taxonomic profiling of bacteria vs. shotgun metagenomic sequencing, enabling both taxonomic and functional profiling of all microorganism classes (bacteria, archaea, protozoa, algae, fungi, viruses, and helminths).
