The RSU Doctoral School in cooperation with the Centre for Education Growth offers RSU students, researchers and anyone interested the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge and skills about English for research purposes.
During the three seminar course, participants will deepen their understanding of current issues in English for research purposes. To study topical issues by linking theory to practice and focusing on research communication through assigned (optional) reading materials, and exercises.

Communicating Research in English
The seminar focuses on such linguistic issues as generic awareness, topic, and a formal research paper. The link between reader, purposeful scientific activity, skills for writing a research paper will be considered. We will also look at some common barriers to writing and possible ways of overcoming them. Motivation and thinking will be discussed in the context of overcoming the writer’s block. In addition, language for research purposes in presentations and poster presentations will be addressed as well.

From Academic Vocabulary to Research Writing
During the seminar, we will learn about terminology and language for specific purposes. In particular, the microstructural units (i.e., lexical units) of the research text that comply with terminology of the field and research requirements will be analysed. Practical exercises will look into academic vocabulary, collocations. The seminar will also focus on formulating research questions, formulating answers, planning a writing project, and weighing evidence. Decision-making and cooperating will also be highlighted. Cohesive devices, a study problem, and a roadmap for creating a structured research paper will be discussed in addition to practical exercises.

From Tools to Quality: Digital Support for Research Writing
Stages of the writing process involve editing and proofreading; besides, reviewers have their own expectations. We will look at some of the requirements and expectations for a qualitative final version, and tools for improving it. Additional issues will cover interference, tips for grammar, punctuation, and coherence.
Lecturer
Dr. philol. Guntars Dreijers has actively cooperated with universities in Latvia and other countries; he has also cooperated with language service provision companies. So far, he has also taught in various academic exchange programs for the University of the West of England in the UK, and participated in interstate academic projects in Finland, the Czech Republic, France, and the USA. His research activities include translation studies, linguocultural studies, and text research. He has participated in conferences organised by foreign universities, given plenary lectures, and served on several editorial boards of foreign publishing houses. For his significant contribution to the development of higher education and science in Latvia, he received the Ministry of Education and Science's Certificate of Appreciation in 2024.
Participation in the seminar is equal to 6 academic hours.
