LaMSA - Latvian Medical Student Association
Who we are
The Latvian Medical Student Association (LaMSA) is a non-governmental organisation managed and operated by Latvian students and prospective health care professionals (medical-, dental- and public health students as well as rehabilitation professionals and others).
LaMSA was founded in 2000 and has been a full member of the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA) since 2002. LaMSA was founded with the aim to provide students with the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the medical systems and policies in other countries, to identify a variety of medical fields, to apply their theoretical knowledge to various projects as well as to acquire new practical knowledge.
Our tasks
- To provide internships outside Latvia in collaboration with IFMSA.
To give students the opportunity to work on public health projects throughout the year, like health and disease prevention days, various campaigns and field trips to schools in the regions.
To provide students with the opportunity to develop skills that will make them competitive professionals in the future - practical exercises in medicine and capacity-building opportunities collaboration with IFMSA and Latvian professionals.
To disseminate regular information about opportunities to visit events organised by IFMSA and the World Health Organisation (WHO).
To publicise regular information about current events in Latvia and world.
To cooperate with other associations and societies to organise projects, get new experience and meet prospective co-workers and acquaintances.
To provide international publicity opportunities in cooperation with IFMSA as well as the possibility to get published in the magazines Medical Student International and The European Sting.
We encourage our members to take on new challenges and push their ideas forward!
Main activities
As a full member of IFMSA we promote cooperation between medical students on a local and international level.
- We organise and implement clinical practice for medical students as well as scientific exchange programs (read more in Latvian).
- We create and participate in projects related to medical and social problems in both Latvia and the world.
- We educate the public about reproductive health, sexually transmitted diseases and prevention.
- We promote medical education studies in Latvia
LaMSA is a member organisation of the International Federation of Medical Students (IFMSA). IFMSA was founded in 1951 and for over 60 years IFMSA has represented and brought together medical students all over the world. It is one of the largest youth organisations in the world uniting 128 national medical student associations from 115 countries on six continents with a total of more than 1.3 million members. IFMSA is part of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations (UN).
