Five RSU projects to feature at the BioPhoT conference
On 29 October, the annual BioPhoT conference at the University of Latvia’s House of Science in Riga will bring together researchers, entrepreneurs, industry representatives, investors and public sector representatives. Five research teams from Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) will also present their projects, which focus on developing new approaches to diagnostics and patient assessment.
The conference will explore how technologies reach end users and how research teams, scientific institutes and businesses across different sectors can work together. Participants will discuss the achievements and lessons learned from BioPhoT projects, the commercialisation of research results and future opportunities for collaboration to address current challenges in biomedicine and photonics. The programme includes two panel discussions and project team presentations on progress and opportunities for further collaboration.
Agnese Oļševska, Director of the RSU Innovation Centre, will moderate the panel discussion on cooperation between science and industry in Latvia.
RSU projects in the presentation programme
- SPERMFREE is developing a non-invasive diagnostic approach to assessing severe male infertility. By analysing cell-free DNA in semen, researchers aim to evaluate testicular function and help families make informed decisions about further treatment
- OsteoXplore is an artificial intelligence platform being developed for early osteoporosis risk assessment using existing dental 3D X-rays, specifically cone-beam computed tomography scans. The solution aims to identify patients who need further examinations at an early stage
- U-TEST is developing a non-invasive method to detect sepsis biomarkers in newborns’ urine. The approach uses dried urine samples to reduce the need for invasive blood sampling
- The optical microcirculation assessment project is developing a minimally invasive method using optical technologies to assess blood flow and tissue oxygenation in the sublingual and gastric mucosa of patients with septic shock. Real-time measurements could help clinicians assess patients’ condition more accurately and select the most appropriate treatment
- LiqBio-BC is developing a non-invasive diagnostic test for bladder cancer by analysing biomarkers in urinary exosomes. The project aims to support earlier detection and clinical decision-making
Attending the conference
The BioPhoT conference will take place at the House of Science, University of Latvia, 3 Jelgavas iela, Rīga. The opening is scheduled for 09:30 and the closing for 15:10. The working language is English.
Researchers, healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs and others interested in technology development and collaboration with research teams are invited to attend. Advance registration is required.
The project “Biomedical and Photonics Research Platform for the Development of Innovative Products (BioPhoT)” is implemented under the State Research Programme “Innovation Fund – Long-term Research Programme.” Platform number: IVPP-EM-Inovācija-2024/1-0002.
