Research on human lesser pelvis

On 6 October at 15:00 in an open meeting of the Medical Promotion Council of Rīga Stradiņš University which will be held in the Hippocrates lecture theatre,16 Dzirciema Str., Rīga, Oksana Koļesova will defend her doctoral thesis “The Sexual Dimorphism and Age-Related Changes of the Lesser Pelvis in Human”.

The doctoral thesis focuses on three basic aspects: sexual dimorphism of the pelvis, prognosis of the narrowest pelvic place and aging tendencies.

The present thesis significantly differs from other research on the gender-related differences of pelvic parameters in bone collections, as the sample for the detection of parameters of the pelvic cavity consists of 329 subjects, and 3D computed tomography bone reconstruction was used in the research.

As the results of the research demonstrate, sexual dimorphism of the lesser pelvis manifests itself unevenly in different pelvic levels. The author has identified a parameter according to which variance in females is higher than in males. Measures of the narrowest place of the pelvic cavity demonstrate a closer relationship with other measures of the lesser pelvis than with those of the greater pelvis. Besides, this relationship is closer in females than in males.

The thesis also focuses on age-related differences of the pelvis. The author demonstrates the tendencies in the change of measures that point to the possible pelvic deformations during one's lifetime. Though, common ageing trends have been observed in the pelvic architecture. The results show that the only parameter that does not depend on age is the transverse diameter of the pelvic cavity at the level of the hip joint centres.
