On Friday, 7 November, the Ministry of Health presented Letters of Commendation and Gratitude to healthcare professionals in the Great Hall of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU), expressing appreciation for their outstanding work in the fields of public health, healthcare, and pharmacy. Awards were presented to twelve of our colleagues.

The Ministry of Health Letter of Commendation
- Prof. Gunta Lazdāne at the RSU Institute of Public Health and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Lead Researcher, for her investment in the development and improvement of healthcare system in Latvia
- Assoc. Prof. Karina Palkova at the Faculty of Social Sciences, Councillor for the Minister of Health on medical and patient rights, Ombudsperson, for her significant contribution to strengthening the legal foundation of the healthcare system, promoting the protection of patient rights, and for the active involvement in public education on health law, as well as for her professional and responsible work in fostering a legally organised, safe, and patient-accessible healthcare environment in Latvia
- Acting Assoc. Prof. Juris Salaks, Director of the Institute of the History of Medicine, for his lifetime contribution to healthcare in Latvia

- Prof. Haralds Plaudis at the RSU Department of Surgery and Chair of the Board at the Riga East Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS), for his professional, selfless work and contribution to the healthcare sector and the development of RAKUS
- Prof. Baiba Rozentāle at the RSU Institute of Public Health, Researcher, for her long-standing, professional work and significant contribution to healthcare in Latvia, the development of infectious disease science, and the strengthening of public health
- Assoc. Prof. Viktorija Kuzema at the RSU Department of Internal Diseases, Chief Physician, Nephrologist of the Nephrology Centre at the Internal Medicine Clinic of the Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital (PSKUS), for her contribution in medicine, medical science, and pedagogical work
- Irisa Zīle-Velika, Senior Tutor at the RSU Institute of Public Health, Head of the Patient Safety and Health Care Quality Improvement Unit of the Research and Health Statistics Department at the Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, for her significant contribution to strengthening public health, promoting patient safety, and improving the quality of healthcare in Latvia
- Ģirts Jirgensons, RSU Tutor in the project Green Business and Entrepreneurship in the EU Single Market and Senior Lawyer at the Legal Support Unit of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Health, for the successful and diligent completion of specific important tasks at the Ministry of Health
- Dace Tarasova, Senior Tutor at the RSU Faculty of Social Sciences, Head of the Medical Risk Fund Department of the Health Inspectorate, for her significant contribution to healthcare in Latvia and the field of medical law
- Acting Lect. Maksims Mukāns at the RSU Statistics Unit, general surgeon at the multidisciplinary surgery clinic AIWA Clinic, bariatric surgeon, for his significant contribution to the development of the bariatrics field in Latvia
- Asst. Jānis Mednieks at the RSU Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Researcher (Acting) at the Department of Radiology, neurologist and electroencephalography specialist at the clinic Pļavnieki, for his outstanding contribution to the development of AS Veselības centru apvienība Neuroclinic and the improvement of neurology services in Latvia
- Lect. Zane Liepiņa at the RSU Department of Rehabilitation, Director of Study Programme Occupational Therapy at the Faculty of Health and Sports Sciences, occupational therapist, for her significant contribution to the development of the rehabilitation sector in Latvia
- Acting Lect. Ints Siliņš at the RSU Department of Surgery, Head of the Clinic of Thoracic Surgery and Invasive Pulmonology (Centre of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases) for his significant contribution to the development of thoracic surgery and invasive pulmonology, and for the long-standing professional work in healthcare
- Līga Eičina, Tutor at the RSU Liepāja Branch, Chief Nurse at the Cardiology department of SIA Liepājas Reģionālā slimnīca, for her conscientious and selfless work in the healthcare sector, making a significant contribution to improving the quality of patient care and building a professional team
- Acting Asst. Karlīna Elksne at RSU Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, physician gynaecologist at AS Veselības centru apvienība, obstetrician, for her significant contribution to the improvement of women’s reproductive healthcare, public education, and the promotion of access to quality health services
- Acting Asst. Oļesja Basina at RSU Department of Internal Diseases, Lead Specialist in gastroenterology at AS Veselības centru apvienība for her professional work and a significant contribution to the implementation of unified quality standards in the diagnosis and treatment of gastroenterological patients
The Ministry's awards are presented twice a year: before the Latvian National Days in May and November.
