Traditional Events

In February 2024, Latvia will host the Latvian Brain Bee olympiad for the third time. The event will be organised by the Neurology Development Foundation, and the Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) Student Scientific Interest Group in Neurology and Neurosurgery in collaboration with the RSU Academy of Junior Doctors.

The olympiad is open to Latvian secondary school students from 10th to 12th grade. The aim of the competition is to promote neuroscience, raise awareness of brain diseases in society, and encourage students' involvement in neuroscience. The olympiad gives participants the opportunity to explore how much they know, get motivated to explore brain anatomy and function, and to get inspired to pursue a career in medicine and neuroscience.

The tasks will be divided into different difficulty levels and the competition will be held in four sections. Participants will have to answer test questions and give short answers on the structure of the human nervous system, its functions and principles, as well as diseases of the nervous system and diagnosing.

The olympiad will be held in English, but participants will be able to give their answers in both English and Latvian.

Regulations (in Latvian)

To give everyone the opportunity to test their knowledge, selections will take place one month before the main competition. It will take place remotely using the RSU e-learning environment, Respondus Monitor, and Lockdown Browser software. The structure of the selection round is similar to that of the olympiad: the top 50 students will have the opportunity to participate in the main round in person at RSU. Before the selection round, the organising team will provide two consultations on the event procedures and technical issues.

In 2022, Latvian Brain Bee joined the International Brain Bee community, which has been active for more than 20 years.

It promotes students' engagement in neuroscience through a multi-level competition. Students first participate in their country's national olympiad and the winner proceeds to the international competition. Next year's International Brain Bee will take place in the United States.
